Job deadlines are fast-approaching, and Graduate Studies understands that it can be challenging to prepare job materials while also finishing a dissertation or thesis. Working closely with the Center for Career and Professional Development at TCU and across multiple disciplines, we have planned an intensive, one-day Job Market Boot Camp to help you get ready. This boot camp is designed to help you gather everything you need for your job search– whether in academia or in the industry. If you are just beginning to gather job materials, or even if you already have materials and want to benefit from the helpful tips and advice of specialists in your field, this Job Market Boot Camp will have all the answers you need!
Here are a few of the opportunities we will be offering at no cost to you:
Introduction to the Job Market
An overview of what to expect: travel expenses, wages, avoiding pitfalls, and how to shift gears from school to big changes like moving, being a colleague/ mentor, and finding the right position for you
Gathering Materials from Your (Busy) Mentors
How to organize multiple letters of recommendation and submission requirements with busy mentors
Your Professional Identity
How to create your personal brand and demonstrate that through interviewing, attire, leveraging social media, and authentic communication
Job Materials Workshop
Writing your cover letter, C. V., or resume. Bring your laptop to work on them here, or bring printed drafts to workshop and revise!
Discuss proper attire for a job interview over lunch.
TCU professors and professionals will also share tips on discussing your research, creating digital job portfolios, knowing your audience, balancing work and life, and even learning your legal rights as a potential new hire.
