A successful candidate will combine the following traits or skills:

  • excellent writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills
  • a working knowledge of academic writing conventions
  • proficiency in one documentation style (APA, MLA, Chicago, or AMA), familiarity with at least one other, and a willingness to learn all four
  • the ability to discern the differences among editing, assisting, tutoring, and teaching
  • the ability to convey both strengths and weaknesses in a writing assignment
  • a willingness to participate in Center for Writing projects, programs, and workshops
  • the ability to give Center for Writing promotional talks when needed
  • a desire to continually improve as a writing consultant.
